Summary of My Teaching Philosophy:
My vision of English Language Arts (ELA) emphasizes social justice, student agency, and textual inclusivity. Accordingly, my curriculum embraces student discussions centered on the politics and power dynamics that are embedded within language and society, as students need to understand that there are linguistic hierarchies and social structures that influence their worldly perceptions and experiences. It is also vital that all students recognize the power and potential of their own voices, and they should learn that there are stories and authors who reflect their own cultures, experiences, and dialects. Moreover, canonical literature is still valued in my vision of ELA, but I plan to introduce my students to a more inclusive definition of academic text. Art, film, graphic novels and manga, songs, tattoos, video games, advertisements, and many other textual mediums should be included in ELA curricula so that all students can critically read the texts that fill their daily lives.

dictionary, how potent for good and evil they become in the hands of one
who knows how to combine them.” - Nathaniel Hawthorne
