Film Unit: Argumentative Essay Assignment and Rubric
Abstract:
Using the guidelines of Hillocks (2011) and Smagorinsky (2008) as my framework, I designed this argumentative essay assignment for a 10th grade ELA curriculum. More specifically, this essay is the summative assessment for a film unit, and it requires students to evaluate a movie of their choice and assess the film's overall quality for an adolescent audience. As part of this assignment, students are asked to describe and analyze how their films represent the characters and support or challenge stereotypical narratives. Thus, this assessment enables students to practice their argumentative writing skills and encourages them to critically deconstruct the films' social and political implications.
ELA curricula should prepare students to read both the word and the world. Accordingly, the following artifact also promotes the development of students’ media literacies: students will be able to read and critique popular films through a social justice lens and further cultivate a critical consciousness. Ideally, students will grapple with the underlying meanings and messages within their selected films, and these efforts will lead to increased cultural awareness and critical inquiry.
