"The Story of an Hour" Prezi
Abstract:
Designed for a 10th grade ELA curriculum, this Prezi supports a three-day lesson plan based on "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin. This Prezi should be used as a visual guide to help students approach and discuss the text and its literary implications. For instance, the Prezi provides a historical context and relevant background information, which should trigger an academic conversation on sociopolitical realities and how these can ultimately shape the stories and characters of the time period. The presentation also offers a variety of other discussion opportunities, and it encourages students to analyze the consequences of social identities (e.g. gender, race, class, etc.) within the context of the short story as well as their own realities.
Students should think critically about the texts they read and recognize how social structures impact the texts of the past and the present. Through this presentation and its corresponding activities, students will discuss the social inequities of Kate Chopin's time and also evaluate the contemporary connections among social identities and systems of power.
